Yacht Racing and Rallying Events at SYC

rya charter logoSkitter SCV0941Racing and rallying is at the heart of our club, with pursuit, inshore, long inshore, offshore and regattas tailored to suit our varied SYC fleet. No matter what your level and preference of sailing we have a good mix of competitive and more relaxing racing. We encourage crews at all levels to have a go, and although we don't give prizes to all comers, accurate ratings and hard work can deliver results.

With regards to cruising, SYC organises a varied programme of rallies along and across the channel. The rallies are usually combined with a race, but it is not necessary to participate in the race to join in the rally. Yachts can join in all or part of these rallies to suit your own timetable. Cruising in company is a great way to explore our coast; you can gain valuable experience and discover new friends.

Christmas Cracker Series Final Race

Sunday 17th December 2017Ocean Dream Devils Advocate DSC2494

The final race in the 2017 series will be held on 17th at the slightly later start time of 11:00 (previously published at 10:00), those who competed in the first two races will know what an enjoyable series this has been so far. Unfortunately race 3 scheduled for the 10th had to be abandoned due to F11 in the forecast but hopefully the final race will benefit from better weather.

The plan for the 17th is a 10:00 lock out, race at 11:00 and return in the 13:30 lock. Then time to tidy up the boats, possibly removing sails etc, then heading to the Shoreham Clubhouse for about 15:00 for a few drinks and the prize giving. This will be followed by one of Natalie's delicious Thai meals, please book at the bar or office to ensure you get a place.

Just Giving page and donate if you can.

Foundation although this is not mandatory.
A separate Notice of Race will be published for this event which starts at 09:00.

Pursuit Race & Supper

Saturday 12th August 2017

The 5th race in the Summer Pursuit Series will be held on 12th August with a start time of 15:00. This is open to any SYC boat and these races are designed to be an easy way into racing especially for boats that enjoy a little competition in a completely non-threatening format. If you have entered the Pursuits before or always thought you might try it then please put this one in your diary. You will need to be down at your boat sometime around 13:15 for the 14:00 lock out, the two Davids (Moonlight Saunter and Escape) will be around and ready to help if you have any questions. Entry requires a basic handicap number but if you haven't already been allocated one then a provisional handicap will be set for you there and then. Boats actual start times are based on their handicap, slower boats start a little before 15:00 and faster ones a little afterwards so there is no high tension start; most boats will be starting entirely on their own and in clear water. The course will be very straight-forward and we will even give you a paper copy if that helps.

Additionally we are bringing back the popular Pursuit Supper after the race. This will be held in the Southwick clubhouse, so only a minute from your boat; drinks will be available when the boats return (likely to be the 1630 or 1730 inward locks). Natalie's team will be serving the drinks and food so it will be her usual good value and high quality. This will be an open evening so apart from you and your crew, please feel free to bring along family and friends. New members and anyone looking to get into sailing will be especially welcome.

Pactolus 2017

Thursday 6 - Sunday 9 July 2017

You will all know that I am a traditionalist and one of the longest traditions in our Club`s glorious 125 years is the Pactolus Race & Rally.

The first event was held back in 1965 when Hermione Lady Colwyn got together with her friends at SRF in Fecamp. The tradition was born. The French sailed to the Isle of Wight & then on to Shoreham. Here a Supper was held followed by a race together back to Fecamp with a further Dinner of Celebration. In those days Hermione presented each Skipper with a momento. I still have my paper knife in use. The weekend was named The Pactolus after her yacht which is still afloat down in the Solent.

This is a new venue for SYC starting with a cross channel race to Deauville then an overnight stay on Saturday. On Sunday there is a choice of relaxing in Deauville, cruising on to Honfleur or you may even want to use the visit as start of a longer summer cruise on the Normandy coast. Deauville and Honfleur both have tidal restrictions and Skippers will need to satisfy themselves of entry and exit arrangements.

Littlehampton Race & Rally

Also Crews Race

After the race we stay at Littlehampton quay on Saturday night with a dinner hosted by the fabulous Arun Yacht Club. Traditionally the evening event calls for 'Cowes Rig' attire so make sure you don't fall in the water! Sunday brings the infamous Crews Race back home with a course set during the event and announced on the pontoon on the morning of the race. Skippers will be aware that Littlehampton has tidal restrictions and they will need to satisfy themselves of entry and exit arrangements.

Dieppe Overnight Race & Rally

Friday 16th - Sunday 18th June 2017

The rally starts with the welcome return of the overnight cross channel race, so boats racing should arrive around breakfast time on the Saturday. Dieppe is a pretty town with a variety of eating places and a fab market on Saturday morning. If you don’t want to night sail, then choose your own start time and arrive when it suits you. If partners, friends etc. don’t want to sail at all then they can take the ferry from Newhaven and still join in.

For further details and to register your interest, please contact our Rally Secretary, Ann Macey by email sailing-section@sussexyacht.club. To see the boats signed up -
